Cataracts are a progressive eye condition developing over time.

They will affect everyone in time. It is the clouding of the lens. It is the most common and most treatable of all the eye conditions.

Symptoms

To begin with people will notice a slight blurring and may be stronger lenses to correct the initial issues.

As the clouding of the lens deteriorates the fogginess will become more evident, you will develop light sensitivity, colours will be less vivid, and you will have halos around bright lights. Reading and recognising peoples faces will become a problem.

Causes

The main cause of cataracts is simply time. As you get older, your lenses thicken, become cloudy in a reaction to UV light and your eye muscles simply do not work as well.

It is possible for genetics to play a part. If your family has a history, then it is more likely you will be susceptible.

Alcohol and smoking have a causal link to cataracts. Removing these from your lifestyle will have a positive impact on your sight.

Diabetes and other medical conditions can cause cataracts. It is important for eye health to have a balanced diet including green vegetables.

It is also true that prolonged uses of some medications affect cataracts. If you think this may be a problem, you need to seek medical advice.

If you are spending lots of time in the sun, it would be advisable to wear sunglasses.

Regular eye checks will alert you to early sign of cataracts and enable you to slow down their progression.

Treatments

Surgery is the most common treatment. When cataracts impact your life, you will be offered the removal of the cloudy lenses for a new synthetic replacement.

This is a safe procedure, and your sight will return within a few days.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is often referred to as the silent thief. It is a build up of fluids in the eye which cause pressure resulting in damage to the optic nerve.

There are diverse types of glaucoma including open and closed angle and congenital being the most common. This is a preventable disease in the main and you must have regular eye checks as it is detectable much earlier than the symptoms.

Symptoms

The difficulty with this disease is the fact that it is not symptomatic for some time.
over time you will lose peripheral vision, develop holes, have blurry vision and you can suffer with migraines.

Causes
the causes all surround the fact the fluid in the eye is either over produced or the outlets are blocking. This results in a pressure in the eye damaging the optic nerve.
blood pressure, diabetes, age, and family history all contribute to the risks of glaucoma.
it is possible that you can encounter some pain with the open and closed variety of this problem.

Treatments

The whole treatment of glaucoma is to relieve and lower the pressure in the eye. This will preserve sight.

The use of medications such as eye drops will lower the pressure by either keeping outlets free or reducing the production of fluids.

If these drugs are not well tolerated, you will be able to receive laser surgery to unblock the ducts.

If all this fails, you can have shunts implanted to your outlets to relieve the pressure.

Monitoring, regular eye checks and a healthy lifestyle with controlled blood pressure and blood sugar all keep this at bay. It is a treatable disease if caught early.
